Initiated and coordinated by the Greater Alexandra Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Galxcoc), it is intended to be a celebration of the cultural history and heritage of Alexandra, the achievements of the people who call it home, and the township’s efforts at improving the lives of residents.

The centenary events will begin in February 2012. Projects include tourism development initiatives, environmental care, health awareness, an arts and music festival and a business expo and investment seminar. Public organisations have seen the potential of the project to draw attention to some of the developments that have taken place.

The Department of Economic Development within the City of Johannesburg has given its backing to the project, as has the Directorate of Arts, Culture and Heritage within the city's Department of Community Development. Both recognise that this anniversary is a significant milestone in the history of the township. It is an opportunity for both arts and business to build the Alex brand and grow business in the township.

Galxcoc president Mpho Motsumi said the historical occasion could help to bridge the socio-economic divide between the people of Alex and the surrounding suburbs. Local city councillors will be involved in communicating with residents in their respective wards.
