Two-year-old rape victim dies
23 April 2013
Maria Mmanageng Motloutsi (2) died at Dr CN Pathudi Hospital at 16:00 last Friday afternoon after complications arose the previous night.
The young girl had to undergo several procedures after she was allegedly brutally raped by David Sekgoba, a close friend of the victim’s father on February 15.
After the attack she spent a week in Mankweng hospital and was recovering at home with her parents until she became ill last Thursday.
Her mother took her to Dr CN Phatudi Hospital but despite the staff’s efforts to save her life, she passed on due to complications.
The toddler will be buried on Thursday morning at Lenyenye Cemetery and the funeral will be held at Lenyenye next to Matseutseu Combined School.
Maake police communications officer, Constable Mpho Seroto said that a post mortem will be conducted on April 23.
The tragedy began when Sekgobela allegedly abducted the toddler on February 15, and took her into the bushes nearby where he brutally raped her and left her for dead.
Sekgobela fled after the alleged rape and was traced to a flat in Yeoville, Gauteng where he was arrested in a pre-dawn police raid on March 3.
Says the toddlers father, 'This is the man who was close to me and I never thought he would do something like this to my only child. We used to go to church together.
’What he has done is inhuman and it disgusts me. He doesn't deserve to live.'
In a interview with Mopani Herald only two weeks ago, the toddlers mother said, 'We are getting impatient now. We want to know whether he will walk free or be jailed for life.’
Sekgobela, the suspected rapist will appear in the Naphuno Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, the same day as the toddler’s funeral, to launch another bail application.
Outraged members of the community and members of the ANC Women’s League picketed at the suspect’s first bail application at Naphuno Magistrate’s Court in Maake on March 5 and might do so again on Thursday.
In February two buildings where the suspect was said to be staying was burnt down, allegedly by community members angered by the attack, and a case of arson was opened.
